Vienna - Today, 40 years ago, Carlos the Jackal leads the terror attack at the ministerial meeting of member countries of OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries) in Vienna, Austria. Arab and German terrorists armed with machine guns stormed and killed three people and seized 63 people, including 11 ministers of OPEC countries.
Carlos called his group as the "Arm of the Arab Revolution 'demanding the release of political anti-Israel statements widely broadcast by radio, and asked supplied buses and jets for terrorists and hostages.
Austrian authorities to comply, and all the hostages were released safely in Algeria. After this incident, OPEC is no longer held a meeting for 25 years.
Born in 1949, Carlos, whose real name is Ilich Ramírez Sánchez is the son of a millionaire Marxist lawyer in Caracas, Venezuela. Carlos was educated at Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow, where he became involved with the People Front for the Liberation of Palestine.
During the 70s and 80s, he often acted as a terrorist group freelancing for various Arab and allegedly killed about 80 people in various bombings, hijacking and murder.

Carlos launched various actions for the independence of Palestine, especially with the group the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). He was expelled from the PFLP leader, Waddi Hadda, for failing to kill the oil minister of Iran and Saudi Arabia in the attack on OPEC headquarters in Vienna, besides accused of embezzling money.
