Everything that is exaggerated is definitely not good. Even watching television for hours can disturb your mental abilities, according to a recent study.
Researchers from the University of California and San Francisco studied the relationship between TV viewing and cognitive function. The result, published in JAMA Psychaiatry Journal, found the more people watch TV, the worse they performed in a series of intelligence tests.
The study looked at 3,247 adults aged between 18 and 30 years, with participants categorized by how much they watch TV on average, then tested the ability to digest information through verbal function.
Overall, the results showed those who frequently watch TV were twice as likely to have poor mental function.
High levels of television viewing and low physical activity in early adulthood is associated with poor speed in the process of thinking in middle age.
It is one of the first studies showing that too much watching TV encourages cognitive aging, even before middle age.
"We found that low levels of physical activity and high levels of television viewing for the young to young adulthood phase is associated with worse cognitive performance in middle age," wrote the study as reported by Independent, Friday (4/12).
The study adds, specifically, this behavior is associated with slower processing speed and executive function were bad but not with verbal memory.
"Participants with active mindset least behave (ie, both low physical activity and television viewing time high), which tend to have poor cognitive function," said the study.
